Bury Corporation Bus 188 Restoration Appeal

Bury Corporation Bus 188 was one of four half-cab buses acquired by Bury Corporation Transport in 1967, for the 23T route from Bury to Bolton. The route operated by service 23T passed over a weak bridge at Trinity Street in Bolton, which required smaller capacity buses, such as 188.

In 1969 SELNEC was formed and 188 and her sisters were repainted from Green and Cream into SELNEC’s distinctive Orange and White colours and 188 operated services in the local area until it was withdrawn in 1980.

Following withdrawal, 188 was purchased for use on a fruit farm in Dundee, where it remained until being preserved by a local bus enthusiast, who donated it to Bury Transport Museum in 2009.

188 will now undergo an extensive restoration programme, which is anticipated will take up to four years to complete. Once work is completed it is planned that 188 will once again return to its original green and cream livery.

Once restored, 188 will become one of the main exhibits in the newly refurbished Bury Transport Museum. To assist with the restoration of 188, pick up a leaflet at Bury Transport Museum. With your help, this former local workhorse can be returned to its former glory.
